Disney’s Commitment to the Environment and Conservation

One of the things I am passionate about it doing my parent to take care of the environment and animal conservations so both are here for future generations to enjoy.  I firmly support the notion of reuse, recycle and renew. And through various organizations have not only learned about but I have become a supporter of several conservation type organizations.

Closest to my heart is the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. I first learned about this after reading about it on the actress Kristen Davis’ facebook page. After reading about the trust and its mission I became a supporter by fostering baby elephants and a blind Rhino. I am researching a trip to Kenya so I visit the orphanage and see the babies.

The Kariega Game Reserve has become another passion of mine. I learned about this group after reading about the horrific poaching of two Rhinos Themba and Thandi. Initially both survived after having their horns hacked off by poachers. Dr Fowles lead the effort to care for and rehabilitate these two but sadly Themba succumbed to his injuries. On a daily basis I continue to follow the progress of the Thandi’s recovery and continue my support through financial contributions and spreading the story of these two Rhinos to anyone who will listen.

When Animal Kingdom first opened I was excited to go on the safari ride. When the ride first opened it took guests on a safari ride that included tracking and stopping poachers.I have recently read that Disney has modified the ride and removed that storyline. I was disappointed at the new but knowing that Disney is involved in Enviromental and Conservation initiatives quelled some of my disappointment. After reseraching Disney’s commitment I was surprised to learn about all the various things they are doing to support and protec the enviroment and conservatoin efforts.

Here is a copy of the information from the Walt Disney Companies website. You can either click the link or read the quoted material below:

“Environmental stewardship and nature conservation are a rich part of Disney’s history and a vital focus of our future.  From the earliest nature movies, through the setting aside of nearly one-third of the Walt Disney World Resort property as a dedicated wildlife conservation area in perpetuity, Disney has worked to preserve nature throughout the world for generations to come.

Environmental Goals: In 2009 we announced ambitious long-term goals to reduce our environmental footprint and inspire our employees, business associates, and consumers to take action to help the planet.  Those goals cover six key areas: climate and energy, waste, ecosystems, water, product footprint, and education and action. Nature Conservation: Around the world, Disney is actively involved in protecting wildlife and wild spaces. We connect kids to nature to ignite their imagination and develop lifelong conservation values. Through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund—our Disneynature film label—and our commitment to animal programs worldwide, we are working to protect and restore the magic of the natural world for generations to come. A Quarter Century of Visits

Here it is 2012 and its the 25th anniversary of my families first trip to Disney.  It was a love at first site trip and we have many amazing memories from that trip and all the others that followed. We instantly became WDW addicts and over the past 25 years we have all been back dozens of times.

My most recent trip was in August 2011 and even though its been less than a year since that trip it feels like a lifetime. So I am super excited that I am once again planning a return trip to WDW. And to make this anniversary even better its a family trip. The last family trip didn’t include my youngest niece because she was just an infant so this will be her first trip to Disney. And I think she is going to love it since she is all about the princesses. Experiencing the Disney Magic with little ones is really an experience worth cherishing!

Its funny that for the past 25 years I have repeatedly vacationed in the same place. Sure I have traveled to other places, some as far away as Thailand but its Disney that really has me coming back as often as I can.

Those of you who have never been probably can’t understand why we keep going back for more. My response to people who ask me that is simple. It’s because Disney is one of the few vacation spots that has something for everyone. Since we often go as a family we have found that there is something for everyone regardless of their age or preferences to do at WDW.

Over the years we have visited all four parks (there were only two when we started going). We have seen numerous parades and shows. We have watched as attractions have come and gone and been replaced with something new (Horizons, Residential Street, Keel Boats).  We have tried the various restaurants and now have our favorites that we love to return to.

With the amount of hotels on the Disney property its hard to pick just one to stay at. Since our first trip members of our family have stayed at: The Polynesian, The Grand Floridian, Port Orleans Riverside (our favorite and it was Dixie Landings when we first stayed there), the Caribbean Beach Resort and The All Star Sports resort. And these are just a few of the amazing resorts at Disney.

One of our favorite things to do is visit Downtown Disney. When we first started going to WDW Downtown Disney was a smaller marketplace area that has grown and changed over the years. We watched it grow into the shopping area that it is now. We saw Pleasure Island come and go and the West Side become what it is today.  We have gone to see Cirque du Soleil La Nouba several times and enjoyed just walking around and taking it all in. And of course what is a trip to Downtown Disney without shopping!!!!

Over the years we have been able to attend some of the special events at the various parks. On our first trip we were able to sit and watch the filming of the Easter Parade with hosts Alan Thicke and Joan London.  Since then we have gone to the Food and Wine Festival, The Flower and Garden Festival, the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party and the Holidays Around the World Candlelight Processional. We have already purchased our tickets to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and we are really looking forward to going. It will be another Disney experience that we can check off our to do list.

On our first trip we went to a character breakfast at the Polynesian.  All the classic characters were there (Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, etc…) and the buffett itself was amazing. We have pictures of the spread they used to put out with the warm and cold offerings and fruit to die for. Some of the fruit was actually carved into sculptures. I will have to dig out the old photo album and scan them in.   Since then we have done a few more and food just hasn’t compared. This time around we are going to Chef Mickey’s and the Princess breakfast at Norway.

Some people might not know that Disney has 5 golf courses and one minature golf course none of which I have tried. Yet!  They also have two water parks that you can spend a hot day enjoying.  I have been to River Country (now closed) and Typhoon Lagoon.  Even though I have repeatedly gone to WDW I still haven’t made it over to Blizzard Beach.

For a different type of fun and one that makes me think of my own local beachside resort there is Disney’s Boardwalk.  The Boardwalk is a quarter mile of shops, restaurants and nightclubs. It’s a fun place to visit on a night when you don’t feel like being in a park or at Downtown Disney.

Another thing that I have yet to do and hope to on a future trip is visit one of the three Spas located on Disney Property. Located at the Grand Floridia, the Dolphin and Saratoga Springs any of these would be a great place to unwind.

Over the years I have ventured off Disney property and explored some of the other things there are to do in Orlando. During our first trip we visited Daytona Beach, Coco Beach, The Kennedy Space Center, Sea World, Cypress Gardens and we explored International Drive. Since then we have spent time at Universal Studios and we are hoping to go back for a day during this trip. My sister and I have been to Discover Cove and we swam with the Dolphins. I personally think it was amazing and well worth money. They are amazing and wonderful creatures and it was such and experience to have. During one trip my sister and I managed to get a pass to be on Kennedy Space Center property during a shuttle launch. I have always been fascinated by the shuttle program and this was a life dream that I got to fulfill. Check out our facebook page to see pictures of the launch.

Just thinking about and writing about my upcoming trip is making me wish I there right now. But part of the fun is the anticipation of the trip. And before we know it our 25th anniversary trip will be here. And I am sure that as soon as I get home I will be planning my next trip :)

Snowglobe Souvenir – Fairy Tales

One of the last snowglobes I have gotten is the “Fairy Tales” snowglobe.  Adorned with all of the princess and their respective princes the globe also lights up.  The music box plays “A Dream is a Wish your Heart Makes”.  The base of the globe also has the supporting characters from Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid.

Snowglobe Souvenir – Artist Drafting Table

My favorite snowglobe is the one depicting an Artists Drafting Table. Having taken art course at Rhode Island School of Design I feel a connection to this globe. The globe itself has Mickey in it. The base is designed to look like an artists drafting table and has pictures of disney comic strips on it.  You can turn on the light and light the entire base or one square at a time. The music box inside of it plays “Mickey Mouse March”.

Snowglobe Souvenir – 100 Years of Magic

My 100 Years of Magic Glove is a really cool globe. It lights up and when the light is turned on it illuminates the filmstrip that scrolls along the base of the globe when the music box is playing. The Characters in the globe itself also rotate when the music is playing. The movie strip has scenes from some of the Classic Disney movies and a few pictures of the castles in the parks.   Also along the base are figures representating different props from the movies and the parks. The globe is adorned with a big Mickey Mouse and plays “There’s a Great Big, Beautiful Tomorrow” the same song heard in the Carasoul of Progress.

Snowglobe Souvenir – Walt Disney World

My Walt Disney World snowglobe also lights up and represents all four of the Disney Parks. When I bought this snowglobe Hollywood Studios was known as MGM Studios. So in the globe itself there is a minuature Cinderella Castle, Spaceship Earth, The Tree of Life and Mickey Ear Water Tower from MGM.  The globe’s music box plays “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah”.

25 Years of Making Disney Memories

Disney’s2011 Theme was “Let the Memories Begin”. My family has been making Disney memories for 25 years!

Do you remember your first trip to Disney? Mine was April, 1987 and it feels like it was yesterday! At the time Walt Disney World only had the Magic Kingdom and Epcot. We stayed on International drive and in that week we not only visited Disney but Sea World, Cypress Gardens and the Kennedy Space Center as well.  From the moment we stepped onto Main Street we were hooked. We have gone back to WDW dozens of time since that first visit and every trip has brought us new adventures and memories.  This year is the 25th anniversary of our first trip to Disney.

I guess you could say that I have grown up with Disney!  Over the years I have watched WDW grow as they added two new parks and numerous hotels. Downtown Disney was a fraction of its size when we first visited and now its an attraction in it own right. We have watched attractions come and go and enjoyed the various themes that Disney has had over the years. (I still cringe when I think back to the castle being covered to look like  a cake). Even though its been 25 years my family and some close family friends still get excited at the thought of booking another trip.

As the 25th anniversary of our first trip to WDW approaches we have begun planning our next big family trip.  What better way to Celebrate 25 years than to go to WDW!  Now that we have little ones in the family I have noticed that the trip planning has changed. Our priority is no longer about getting reservations at Tony’s Town Square Restaurant its about getting a reservation at Chef Mickey!

I have mentioned to friends that we are planning our next trip for sometime later this year and they always look at me funny.  “Your going again?” is the typical response. Yes I am!  “Why?” is usually the next question. Because its Disney. Its a magical place. It really is and I truly believe that. This is where you come to escape the reality of life and spend some time enjoying the fantasy of Disney. Its the place where friends come to meet up and enjoy a day together.  Where families spend time laughing, having fun and enjoying a meal together at the end of the day.  New “friendships” have been formed while standing in a never ending line and people you meet whether they are cast members or other guests are just a little bit nicer.

Disney is a place for every child to enjoy being a child even if that child is a grown man or an elderly woman! This is the place where you skip through the World Showcase, where having an ice cream everyday is ok and signing along on each ride is perfectly normal.  Its where people gather to watch a parade or the fireworks, where people celebrate everything from an engagement to a wedding, a birthday to an anniversary or anything else you can think of.

Our family has grown and now the youngest generation is getting their chance to enjoy the magic. That is what makes Disney so magical to us. That generations of our family can come to this place and spend a week enjoying each others company. That we can laugh together, have fun together and be silly together.  We can experience things together and reminisce about them for years to come. That is what Making Memories is all about!

Snowglobe Souvenir – Epcot

My Epcot snowglobe is a bit more detailed than the first few snowglobes I brought home from Disney.

This globe has a Ecpot sign at the top and inside the globe is Spaceship Earth which lights up.  Around the base is a representation of each of the nations located in the World Showcase.  The music box in the globe plays “Celebrate the Future”.

Snowglobe Souvenir – Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast was another of my early snowglobes. The globe sits on the Beasts castle and shows all of the characters inside. The music box inside plays “Beauty and the Beast”.

Snowglobe Souvenir – Lady and the Tramp

The first snowglobe I got from Walt Disney World was actually a gift from my parents. And it was a commerative Lady and the Tramp globe. Lady and the Tramp was one of my favorite childhood movies.  The globes depicts the famous spaghetti eating scene between Lady and the Tramp and contains a music box that plays “Bella Notte”.
